Odyssey Service Learning
Odyssey offers a Service Learning program where five students teams partner with a community non-profit organization. They plan with the agency and work with them to help in our community. The students and staff also incorporate classroom learning into the project. The students then spend time reflecting on their service work and report back to the school community on their accomplishments. Service learning is a way of teaching that integrates community service and classroom instruction. It makes learning more meaningful and relevant to students by enabling students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real-life situations. Students are presented with areas of need within the community by various organizations. They are then asked to choose that area which they feel is the best fit and where they can do the most good. Together they develop projects that will utilize student?s talents while providing services that will benefit others. Groups of 8 to 12 students work with their community partner. The organizations that the students have worked with in past years include: Capital Area Food Bank, mentoring young children at Capitol School and Brentwood Elementary school, Pioneer Farms, Habitat for Humanity, Hearts and Hooves, Texas State School for the Blind, and The Town Lake Animal Shelter. The students reflect on the value of their work before, during, and after to enhance learning and sense of achievement. The students are driven by the prospect of creating goodwill and can recognize the difference they can make in their community. This is particularly enriching to our population of students.
