Our Story

Early Days

Odyssey School was born in 1997, when three special education professionals recognized the need in Austin for a private school that would enable students with learning differences to experience academic success. Odyssey opened its doors in 1998 with nineteen students, two teachers, and a head of school. That first location, in the basement of the Marywood Child and Family Services building, was full of hope, excitement, and promise. The school quickly outgrew that first facility, and relocated to a converted dance studio in Central Austin. We stayed in that cramped Houston Street building for five years, until 2005, when the school moved to its current location on Red River Street.

our story

High School

In its first years, Odyssey served elementary and middle school students with learning differences. In 2005, we earned our high school accreditation and in 2006 we became the first private high school in central Texas dedicated solely to students with learning differences. In 2009, Odyssey proudly conferred diplomas on its first class of graduating seniors. We look forward to continually refining our service to students of all ages with learning differences in the years to come.

Today

Odyssey continues to grow and expand. Adventure week is a chance for all of our students to engage in an annual journey of discovery with trips to Washington D.C., Big Bend National Park, Denver Colorado, and more. Career Connections brings our students out into the community, and our teachers continue to teach to our students’ strengths. While still committed to our student:staff ratio of 8:1, we have seen our enrollment grow substantially and we are rapidly outgrowing our current facility. Stay tuned for news on the future of Odyssey School!
