How Odyssey addresses homework.

For Odyssey students, homework can be a difficult activity for both the student and their family. Many children with learning challenges have limited mental energy after a day in school. Their attention deficits and learning disabilities may make independent completion of homework a grueling task. Often, parents tell me their evenings are composed of "homework wars" resulting in a negative interaction between child and parents.

At Odyssey, we view homework as a time to practice previously learned skills. Thus, students should be able to complete homework independently or with limited guidance from parents. Homework also serves as an opportunity for our students to practice organizational skills and self-responsibility. Instructional staff are very careful not to overload students with more than one subject per night. Our policy with parents is never to engage in "homework wars." We always address individual needs in assigning homework.
