Service learning is the heart of our program. Once a month, Odyssey students get out into the community and perform volunteer work at various organizations. This work not only provides the community organizations with much needed support, it embeds a habit of service and giving into our students’ minds. It’s a great way to raise community awareness about Odyssey and learning disabilities in general: we have had a considerable amount of broadcast news coverage and, in 2005, received a Distinguished Service Award from the Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities.
